A dire scarcity of meals and ongoing Israeli strikes in Gaza have made for a somber begin to Ramadan, usually a time of dawn-to-dusk fasting and celebration, after a hoped-for cease-fire failed to come back collectively by the beginning of the Muslim holy month. Israel’s army is investigating whether or not a high-ranking Hamas commander might have been killed in a weekend strike by Israeli fighter jets that focused an underground compound in central Gaza.
